The Importance of Cleaning Grout

When we clean our homes, we think about dusting, mopping the floor, vacuuming, washing dishes, etc. However, if we don’t clean grout, our rooms can still look dirty. Dirty grout doesn’t just look bad; it also isn’t very sanitary.

Grout easily collects moisture, dirt, crumbs, bacteria, and basically absorbs anything Lots of things could possibly touch your grout: shoes, pets, urine, food, water, poisonous chemicals, makeup, and more.

Grout is porous. Since it’s collecting all this dirt, liquids, and water, it becomes a breeding ground for germs and bacteria. Even if you mop and scrub your floors and walls meticulously, bacteria can still thrive in the grout, because it’s been so deeply absorbed.

A proper grout cleaner and sealer are the best solutions to getting rid of unsanitary and unsightly grout. You don’t want to be walking on all those germs, or having children touching tiles and putting that bacteria into their mouth. Dirt within the grout can be very difficult to clean and keep clean, but with the right grout cleaner and sealer, this process becomes a lot easier. You will spend less time cleaning the grout to restore it to a “like new” appearance.

This is how you can clean and protect your grout the right way. First, sweep the floor to remove any loose dirt or debris on the surface of the tiles and grout. Next, apply  Grout & Tile Deep Cleaner. Use a mop to distribute the cleaner over the entire floor. Allow the grout cleaner to saturate into the grout for 10 to 15 minutes, th,en scrub the area with a grout or bristle brush. After you scrub the dirt away with a few brushstrokes, use a clean rag to wipe away any remaining grout cleaner.

After you clean the grout with the cleaner, it’s a smart idea to utilize Grout Shield’s grout sealers to protect the grout from getting dirty, stained and germ-filled again.

How to Get Mud Stains Out of Grout

Homes are made to be lived in. Whether it’s a rainy spring day or the kids were playing football on the grass, there’s a good chance mud will get trekked into your home. As you know, mud is wet and brownish/black in color. Even if you have darker floors, mud is noticeable.

Mud can be easy to wipe off tiles, but the mud can be hard to clean out of grout because it quickly absorbs into the grout lines.

Since grout is porous and usually light-colored, it will easily absorb the dark color of mud and become discolored. With the right grout cleaning and sealing products, you can clean up the mud and it will look like the mud was never there. Remember, you want to clean up mud immediately, so the mud stain is easier to clean up and disappear.

Our team at Grout Shield can help you get rid of mud stains in grout for good. A mud stain on your grout can make your kitchen or grout look old, dull, and dirty, even if you clean it regularly.

Besides getting rid of the discoloration, Grout Shield products also rid the grout of bacteria and other harmful germs that get absorbed into the grout lines over time. You never know what germs are lurking the mud that is brought into your home, and you don’t want to walk into the mud every day.

Most home-cleaning products and articles may tell you to clean up the stains with bleach, ammonia or white vinegar. Sure, these chemicals and products may work, but they also aren’t really cleaning the grout, and many of these chemicals can actually cause the grout to crack or break.

To remove the mud stains, you want to first blot the area with a clean cloth, but wait till the mud is dry or you will risk spreading the mud around more. Wipe the area clean of the mud. You may notice your grout is stained with a color now. To remove the mud stain, you will want to use Grout Shield’s Grout & Tile Deep Cleaner, which cleans and lifts deep and hard-to-clean stains out of the grout’s pores.

To use this cleaner, mix 1 ounce of the cleaner with 8 ounces of warm water. Then, brush the cleaner into the grout with a brush applicator. Let the mixture sit into the grout lines for a few minutes. Then, wipe away the cleaner with a sponge and towel dry the floor. The mud will be gone.

Now, if the mud stain still won’t fully disappear, you can make the grout color look like new again with Grout Shield’s color sealer. You just squeeze the sealer into the grout lines. Then, spread it into the grout lines with a brush applicator or your finger and wipe away the excess with a towel or chamois. You can choose any color in the world to recolor your grout. Check out our grout colors. You can completely change the look of your room with a new grout color.

If you don’t need to recolor your grout, you should seal it with a clear grout sealer after cleaning it, to protect it from future spills and accidents. Next time mud seeps into your grout, the sealer will prevent the mud getting into the grout lines, and you can wipe the mud right up with no stains left behind.
